Beer of the Week: Avery Mephistopheles’

Avery Brewing – Boulder, CO
Big Ass Stout: 16.43% ABV

First off, love the bottle art on the Avery’s Demons series. The bottle just looks..angry. I love me an angry ass stout. And to be completely honest, I’m recycling this post from an old blogging failure – Post-Workout Beer. This particular bottle was actually from 2011 and tasted in 2012. Onwards… Continue reading

Beer of the Week: Southern Star Buried Hatchet

Southern Star Brewing Co – Conroe, TX
Imperial Stout – 8.25% ABV

Tears welled in my eyes as I opened the last can of Buried Hatchet…just kidding. I love this beer, but I’m not that dramatic. As Southern Star is still a rather small brewery now located over 1,000 miles away from me, I won’t be drinking anything by them again for a while. Beer of the Week: Marble IPA

Marble Brewery – Albuquerque, NM
India Pale Ale – 6.8% ABV

Immediately after college, I lived in Albuquerque for a year. And I got to know Marble Brewery WELL. Luckily, it’s available up here in Fort Collins, and one of my favorite easy-drinking IPA’s.

It has a nice copper color – typical of a single IPA, nothing special, but certainly not ugly. It’s sadly bland on the nose. There’s a bit of orange in there, piney bitterness, but not too much else. But the taste is spot on. Orange peel. Lots of orange, actually. Definitely some mango. Great tropical fruit notes. Great carbonation, good lacing, and goes down like like a session ale. A bit light in body, but that’s part of what makes Marble IPA such a great summer beer.
